How A Rebranding Strategy Can Boost Your Business (and Win Davey Awards)

Recently, Logo Design NYC won a prestigious silver Davey Award for our website redesign (part of the winning rebranding strategy we discuss in this article).

As a boutique Logo Design & Branding agency, winning an award and recognition for our web design seemed like a major feat. Impossible even. But to be honest, we earned it.

If you want to find out how you can boost your own business  – and tackle the behemoths of your industry –  by rebranding and investing in a logo redesign (see also: taking chances, recognizing your strengths and creating a winning digital brand strategy) just stay with me here…

The Davey Awards for Web Design

Awarded: Silver

Category: Websites – Small Businesses

David, Goliath & The Davey Awards

David defeated the giant Goliath with a big idea and a little rock – the sort of thing small agencies do each year. The annual International Davey Awards honors the achievements of the “Creative Davids” who derive their strength from big ideas, rather than stratospheric budgets.

You don’t have to be religious to know the Biblical story of David vs. Goliath.  It’s a powerful parable about a lowly Shepard boy named David, armed with nothing but a slingshot and a stone , who overcame all odds to defeat  Goliath, a ruthless behemoth warrior.

On it’s face its a tale of weak vs. strong or small vs. big. But that reductionist interpretation misses the point entirely. David – aka the “lowly Shepard boy” is anything but weak. He’s a brilliant strategist who relies on his intellect to overcome Goliath’s only real advantage – size.

On top of that, he crafted a simple but deadly weapon: the slingshot. To kill Goliath with a single shot – a stone to the head – required skill, precision, and an eye for opportunity. David took advantage of the perfect opportunity at the right time to shoot from precisely the right angle in order to make the kill.

In reality, the only thing Goliath had going for him was his size. He was born with his strong stature and did nothing to earn it. He never needed to develop a fighting strategy. He relied on intimidation tactics and  brute strength. There was nothing for him to overcome.

The more you dissect the story – the more it brings into question: who’s really the underdog here?  And also, what the he!! does any of this have to do with the Davey Award, web design or digital marketing strategy?

I’ll get to that second question first. In the year of Coronavirus Pandemic 2020, the vast majority of us are Davids. This year more than ever, its Main Street vs. the tech Giants: Amazon, Google, and Facebook.

Even more, we need to work with them in order to remain visible and relevant.  A website you can’t find in Google is like a rural country store bypassed by a highway without exits. Or a David without a slingshot. In other words, it’s no longer enough just to have a website.   A Strong digital marketing strategy isn’t optional in 2020.

Small businesses struggle to stay afloat as COVID shut-downs decimate lives and livelihoods. When you’re living on debt, it’s hard to see even the faintest glimmer of opportunity ahead – but it’s there if you know where to look.

And that means celebrating, honoring, and analyzing what seem like small wins at the time to steer you on the path to victory.

A Winning rebranding strategy

For LogoDesignNYC.Com, it’s taking time out to acknowledge the significance of winning two consecutive Davey Awards in 2019 and 2020 (Humble brag: We’ve actually won nine Davey Awards in total. But eight of them were for our clients’ websites. It feels really good to win this one for us).  When you’re a small business owner life can feel like all work and no reward just to keep the lights on.

So to say it feels nice for our boutique Logo Design company to be recognized with a Silver Davey Award for small business web design is an understatement.

Like many on Main Street – we’re working with a small team, and competing against the free logo design behemoths daily. There’s less than 10 of us.

But in 2020, we took a step back to reflect, rebrand, and revise our brand strategy. Offering web design and logo design means that our website should reflect our expertise. As many in our industry know – you’re usually so busy making clients’ websites and logos standout, that you neglect the face of your own business.

But in such a competitive market, we knew it would be worth it.

Not only did we rebrand, we did a complete website redesign, reorganized our information architecture to maximize search engine optimization (SEO) efforts, and churned out lots of fresh, optimized content. We also expanded our branding with an alternate logo design variation or a logo redesign.

Overall, the redesign and rebranding was the result of the company recreating itself. With a few new team leaders on board the timing was right to refresh our own brand. In fact, we literally finished our website facelift on the same day we submitted it to the Davey Awards competition.

Our personalized customer service is one thing that remained the same. It has always been one of our greatest selling points – and that shines through in our reviews.

As Davids, we’ll never win on being the biggest or most well known – but our desire to help others build success through branding and rebranding; including website and logo design – our determination, eye for opportunity, and experience working with our strengths – never steers us wrong.

brand recognition feels good

In 2020 – we’re all Davids battling the brave new world of the Coronavirus Pandemic. Thriving means re-strategizing and finding opportunities to grow our online presence while boosting sales through new digital offerings.

Going back to the question of who was the underdog in David vs. Goliath – I’d say David had the upper-hand due to his ability to strategize. That said, if you’re a general store trying to compete with Amazon, you’ll never win without a targeted niche strategy. Whether it’s being local, your organic offerings, or dedicated customer service – you must evaluate your strengths and incorporate them into a strong digital strategy to succeed.

If that sounds like a daunting task it is. But you did it before when you first started your business, and you can do it again.  And if you need a helping hand a long the way – we’re here for your web design, logo redesign, and rebranding needs. Thinking about what just a single David accomplished when he killed Goliath  – imagine what we could achieve if all Davids of the world put their strengths together?  At the very least, you just might win a Davey Award!
